Child Dedication
As a child, Jesus was brought by Joseph and Mary to the House of the Lord. It was an act of dedication and recognition that He really belonged to God (Luke 2:22). Throughout His ministry, people brought children to Jesus and He placed His hands on them, and blessed them.
Why dedicate your child?
Christians are to recognize everything we have belongs to God (Psalm 127:3-5). The children that are born into our homes belong to Him as well. This dedication is not an acknowledgement of the salvation of the child, but a public expression and declaration of the fact that the parents are presenting their child to God to work in his/her life, as well as a public declaration by the parents they will seek to do everything in their power, as God gives them wisdom, to see that the child grows up to respect and honor God and to love and serve Jesus Christ as their Savior. The dedication is more than a ritual. It is a commitment of parents to honor the will and Word of God.
What is a Child Dedication?
- An opportunity to thank God for the precious gift of your child, and publicly declare your intentions to raise him/her in a Christian home.
- A family dedication, where the parents commit themselves to abide by biblical principles and to raise their children according to God’s standards.
Not only are you dedicating your child to God, you are dedicating yourselves, as parents to Christ and the church. You are committing yourselves to maintaining a Christian home, where Christ is honored and the Word of God is held in reverence. A child’s first impression of God comes from you (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Abraham Lincoln said, “A child is a person who is going to carry on what you have started.” Train up a child in the way he should go, but first be sure to go that way yourself.
